With over 275 species in such a small area, most of them endemics, Thattekkad offers a rare view into the world of birding in Kerala. The Hornbill Camp has been specifically planned to make you get the most out of your short stay here.  This is the ideal place to sight the maximum number of birds in such a small  geographic area. The camp is so located, to perfectly blend in the jungle, so you can enjoy your own private jungle and the spectacular view of the river Periyar. Along its banks, birds  flock in their thousands and the cool ambience is the ultimate prize for the birder. This is the ideal place to be one with nature and observe nature in all its pristine glory as well as the birds in their magnificence. We recommend that you plan your trips during the months of October to May.

For attention of Travellers to Hornbill Camp The Hornbill Camp is  constructed using local materials, local labour, managed by local community members & their livelihood depends on the camp. The food is sourced locally and the villagers including the local drivers of tuk-tuks and taxis get a chance to make a decent living from the camp. Hence seeing this camp as just another hotel is missing the point. The ambience & the experience, the dedicated service of the camp staff & the great ethnic food will more than make up for the loss of creature comforts of a hotel or a resort. If by any chance you are indeed looking for hotel with aircon, standard hotel services, Hornbill camp is probably not the right place. A modern resort with all modern amenities is available slightly up the road from the camp. Hornbill Camp is an adventure activities-based camp. We arrange kayaking, cycling, walks and birding. It is important to note that the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary has been closed for some time now. But that does not in any way take away the birding experience at Thattekkad. The birding is in fact done in areas that surround the sanctuary. There is no restriction whatsoever to birding at these places and all species which a birder looks for are easily seen in these areas. A vehicle is  essential to go birding in the areas around the sanctuary and other areas at Thattekkad.

Among the specialties of this camp is the comfortable beds, en-suite attached European style closet, shower and running water. The food is  excellent, prepared with home-grown spices. It would indeed be the ultimate experience to watch the rain forest from your private verandah on the banks of  the gently flowing river Periyar !

For all visitors to our camp, we arrange river kayaking expedition trips to discover the majesty of the thick  forests across the river, short walks in the plantations that surround the camp and village visits for those interested in the culture and lifestyles of the region.

The Camp & Gazebo

The staff at the camp are all from the local communities and earn an income from running of the camp. We source all our requirements from the local village. hence your stay here goes a long way to ensuring that the local communities gain directly from tourism !!!
